Foreword
Jeffrey Sarmiento is a Filipino American. This reality provides the stimulus for exploration in his work. In his art, as in life, text, images, and symbols intersect, obfuscate, clarify, layer and collide, creating meaning and context. A shift in perspective reveals new meanings, new experiences. Identity is constantly mutating.
Some of the art work reproduced in this catalog was created during an eight-week Emerging Visiting Artist Fellowship at UrbanGlass. Experimentation and risk taking are at the heart of this program. We’re delighted and proud to have played a significant role in the creation of an exciting body of new work by a gifted, young artist.

In Jeffrey Sarmiento’s work, memories of human interaction, struggle, assimilation, and family history are expressed as dreamy photographic images trapped inside of layers of fused glass. Particularly within the medium of glass, it is rare to find an artist whose ideas and intellect match his technical skill.
However, Sarmiento’s meticulous new approaches to glassworking are most appropriate for his complex vision. With a unique combination of digital, mechanical and manual working methods, he explores new ideas he found within his travels, his many residencies, and his collaborations. Sarmiento’s work conveys the poignancy of life in a real, thought-provoking way, and his innovative techniques create a surprisingly powerful nostalgic effect.
We are honored to host this exhibition at McLeod Residence, a home for art, technology, and collaboration where Sarmiento’s experimental work fits perfectly.
